We catch and release all wild rainbows but they are a blast to catch!

As the 2022 Sacramento River King salmon fall season grinds to a halt we're beginning to focus on the steelhead/trout fishing until our late fall King salmon season begins in November.  Currently we're seeing very few salmon caught in the Barge Hole area below Coleman National Fish Hatchery's Battle Creek and the salmon we have been seeing are very dark.  Its that time of the year and we really don't expect anything but slow fishing now.  Fortunately, we are seeing improved steelhead and wild trout fishing now that the salmon crowds are gone and that's been kkeping things interesting.  The native trout populations are always available but its time for our hatchery run of steelhead to start showing now thru February.  Water conditions are acceptable for now but we surely could use some rain to help get the steelhead moving up river into the Anderson areas we fish.  It will also be necessary if we want to start seeing some early arriving late fall Kings sometime in the next few weeks.  We had a pretty poor fall run this year but there are plenty of reasons for that which will be reported when all the data comes in.  Our late fall salmon are enjoying much cooler water temps and we expect to see them arriving right on schedule.  I'll be back in a few weeks to report on the late fall run but in the meantime we'll be fishing for steelhead and wild trout!
