Fishing for Winter Steelhead on the upper Klamath River this January has ranged from slow to very good. The weather this time of year tends to dictate how fishing will be on the river. Extremely cold can slow the bite way down especially when using artificials such as flies or plugs. Bait fishing can even slow down when the water temperatures drop into the high thirties. Stable winter weather always seems to be the key to better if not great fishing. The Steelhead and Trout seem to bite better when winter temperatures are between 30 and 50 and the weather is not changing every few hours. That all said it has been a pretty good month for Steelhead on the upper Klamath River. We have landed quite a few Hatchery and Wild Steelhead weighing between 2 and 6 pounds (17 to 25 inches in length). Boat traffic has been next to none. I have often been alone or seen one other boat on the river. Right now I would suggest fishing bait (roe or night crawlers) or plugs and fish them as slow as possible. The river is very cold right now so a slow methodical approach is best. Flies would be my third choice unless they are in combination with bait. The weather for the next week looks to be improving daily with sun and low to mid fifty temperatures by the next weekend.
