Last weeks temps for the Trinity Valley were 99/54 degrees with no rain. Next weeks forecast are 96/53 degrees with cloudy overcast mornings and sunny afternoons through Friday.

The Willow Creek weir count started to drop off Tuesday where as the week before we were getting over 100 Steelhead per day through the weir the count has dropped off to less than 50 per day for Steelhead but the count for Chinook Salmon has started to increase. There are over 1,000 fresh adult Steelhead in the Trinity River some where between the Hawkins Bar Bridge and the Junction City Weir. The $94,000 question IS where? I have to say I sure don't know, but I expect that to change very soon. One thing I do know is that in about a week or so there is going to be some very HOT action between Cedar Flat Bridge and Del Loma. The Junction City weir is still counting fish but the count is so low that the counters have to take turns to see who can run up river the fastest just to fill in the time. The count was 14 Chinook salmon for the week and 13 Steelhead the week with no Coho or German Brown trout going through the weir. So like I said the fish have to be somewhere, I just don't know where yet.

Down at the mouth of the Klamath the count against the quota is going very slow. DFG has only counted 134 Fall Chinook harvested last week below the 101bridge vs. 114 Chinook above the 101 Bridge for a total of 431Fall Chinook to date for the season. Only 71 Steelhead have been harvested for a total of 433 to date for the season. I think that is the run of Steelhead we saw go through the Willow Creek weir last week.

Last week one of my customers, a Lori Wilson from Cobb, CA, caught her very first Steelhead ever and it was a beauty of a buck. Fresh into the river with just a hint of a pink stripe down its middle, it was 5 to 5-1/2lbs and really gave her a tussle. It came out of the water at least 3 to 4 time for her and each time she would let out a squeal that pierced the air like a hot knife through butter. That was one happy lady.

Above Junction City fishing has been good except for in the middle of the day when it gets hot. Once the sun gets off the water and it starts to cool down then fishing picks up again for the evening.

Once again I must remind you the Trinity River is "CLOSED TO FISHING" from the Hawkins Bar Bridge to the Cedar Flat Bridge. Anyone caught with a fishing pole along the river in that area will be CITED. This area includes the Gray's and Burnt Ranch Falls. Now on the other hand the Lower Trinity and upper Klamath is now open the keeping of adult Chinook Salmon and you can keep 2-per day with 4 in possession within a 7-day period.

The Mid-Klamath around Weitchpec and Orleans has seen an influx of half-pounders and the bite is starting to turn on for those fishermen who like to fish that area. For the last several weeks it has been very hard to get any thing to bite down there. One fly fisherman said that he was going to break out his Turkey Fly and I asked what kind of fly was that? He very politely told me that you take a Turkey Feather and tie it to a ??-stick of dynamite. It does bring up the fish and I bet that it would wake up the wardens also. I know that with the warm water it has been hard to get very much of anything to bite. Well I am happy to tell you my source in that area has told me that the bite is back on and they are hooking fish in Weitchpec!
