8-12-2007
Trinity Lake is 54ft. below the over flow and 67.9% of capacity. Average inflow to the lake for the week is 8cfs. 1,899cfs is being released to the Sacramento River. Trinity River @ Lewiston is 445cfs & water temp is 52.5, air 82 @ 2:00pm today.
Douglas City is 2.2ft. @ 431cfs, water temps 55.5, air 81. Helena / North Fork is 9.3ft. @ 458cfs, water temps 59.8, air 82 degrees. Cedar Flat is 2.9ft. @ 493cfs. Willow Creek est. @ 525cfs & water about 64, air 82. Hoopa is 11.6ft. @ 771cfs. Klamath River releases at Iron Gate are 1,510cfs. Seiad Valley is 2ft. @ 1,140cfs. Happy Camp est. @ 1,180cfs.
Somes Bar est. 1,464cfs. Orleans is 3.5ft. @ 1,820cfs. Weitchpec est. 2,500cfs. Klamath at 101 8.7ft. @ 2,260cfs.
Last weeks temps for the Trinity Valley were 90/52 degrees with no rain. Next weeks forecast are 90/49 degrees with clear days until Wednesday then cloudy mornings thru Friday with sunny afternoons.?ĮThe Trinity is seeing more fresh fish coming into the river down in Hoopa. I am not sure if this is the last surge of Spring Chinook or the early part of the Fall run, but there are more fish in the lower Trinity now than the last couple of weeks. This is good in that we will now be able to start to catch some fresh adults. The Willow Creek weir will start o go in this coming week and should probably be operational by the beginning the week after (Aug 20th)
The Junction City weir count for last week is showing another decrease, there were only 54 Chinook go through the weir and only 12 of those were hatchery fish. NO Coho were counted. Steelhead, 15-adults, 1-half-pounder with 13 being hatchery fish. Germen Brown, total 7 with 3 over 16-1/2 inches
The Lewiston to Douglas City section of the Trinity is still a good fish for the early morning with 2-5 fish per drift landed in the mornings. From daylight to first light on the water drift boaters are doing good with sardine wrapped Kwikfish and then switching over to roe. Roe or tuna balls are still working in the deep holes with roe doing somewhat better in that section of the river. The bank fishers are still doing good with spinners in the morning and late evenings and working roe after the sun in on the water. The Junction City are is still a little slow but is producing some nice adults Chinook up to 15lbs. Down at Del Loma the word is that some adult Steelies have been holding up in the holes and cooler swifter water behind the Del Loma RV Park. The problem is that the bank fishermen have been using the smaller (6ft,) trout rods with 8lbs. test line instead of the longer 8ft. Steelhead type rods and are loosing many of the larger hooked fish, several in the 8 to 12lb. range. One reportedly about 36 inches, the fisher was using a #4 Blue Fox spinner, working the seam of the swift water when this monster nailed that spinner and came out of the water about for feet into the air before breaking off the lighter line. That seems to be the problem lately as the summer crowds are coming in and think they are fishing for trout but don't understand that what trout we do have in the Trinity are just baby Steelhead. Then they hook up to one of our monstrous Trinity adult Steelhead and BAM they have a fight for their life on their hands, with the fish usually being the winner.
Mean while down on the lower Trinity we are seeing some nice fresh Chinook coming up out of the Hoopa Gorge. The better fishing is in the morning using #4 or #5 Blue Fox spinner and drifting it through some swift water down into and through a deep hole. Fresh roe works well using this same technique. You can also do well in the late evenings when it starts to cool off. Remember Sept 1st. you will be able to keep 2-adults and 1-jack for a total of 3-fish per day below the South Fork of the Trinity. That includes the Hoopa valley. The same goes for the Klamath above the Weitchpec Bridge. The reason for this is to protect the Spring run Chinook by not over fishing them. Not to worry we will have plenty of Fall Chinook heading up the river and the regulations will be changing shortly.
The Lower Klamath from Johnson up to Weitchpec Bridge is seeing more fresh fish ever day so there should be plenty of good fishing all the way up to Orleans for the time being. Until next time-------
