by E.B. Duggan
7-1-2007
Trinity Lake is38 ft. below the over flow and 79 % of capacity. Average inflow to the lake for the week is 224cfs. 1,805cfs is being released to the Sacramento River. Releases to the Trinity River @ Lewiston are 445cfs & water temperatures are 50 degrees with air temps of 55 degrees at 8:00am today. Douglas City flows are 451cfs @ 2.2ft, with water temps of 58 degrees & air temps are 54 degrees. Helena / North Fork flows are 454cfs @ 9.3ft, with water temperatures of 59.9 degrees and air temps of 55 degrees. Cedar Flat water flows are 604cfs @ 3.2ft. Willow Creek flows are est. @ 720cfs with water temperatures about 58 degrees and air at 56 degrees at 8:00apm today. Hoopa water flows are 1,110 cfs. @ 12.1ft, with water temps of about 64 degrees. The Klamath River releases at Iron Gate are 1,510cfs. Seiad Valley flows are 1,820cfs @ 2.9t. Happy Camp flows are est. at about 1,900cfs. Somes Bar flows are 2,470cfs; Orleans flows are 2,900cfs @ 4.4ft. Water flows at Weitchpec are about 4,000cfs with water temps of 67.9 degrees & air temps at 57 degrees. Klamath at 101 Bridge is 4,120cfs @ 9.6ft and water temperatures are 70 degrees. Last weeks temps for the Trinity Valley were 89/44 degrees with no rain. Next weeks forecast is for 100/49 degrees with cloudy mornings to Wednesday then clear and hot days for the fourth of July thru the weekend. The Trinity River is at summer flows to mid October. Water temperatures are rising as inflowing streams subside and stop flowing into the main stem of the Trinity. In the next couple of weeks the upper Trinity is going to be low in many of the riffles. Notice: The Klamath has already started to heat up and the algae is forming in the Mid-Klamath as I write this report. If the powers that may be don't get on the ball to try and check this rise in the water temperatures we could be in for another "Fish Kill" such as we had in 2002. We don't need this type of water conditions now as we are expecting 100degree weather for the Fourth of July week and the beginning of the salmon runs. As I find out more information on these conditions I will post them on the web.
The spring run has finally reached the Lower Trinity, and is starting to work their way up river. As usual?Įthey are building up at Grays & Burnt Ranch Falls. The slide is still coming into the river below New River but it is not making the river as muddy as before. Visibility is about 3 to 4ft in that area and is clearing to about 6-8ft. down in Hawkins Bar. Fishing has picked up somewhat in the upper sections of the river but mostly for German Browns. The trick for them is to use small spinners along the slower edge of the current or work minnow type lures. I am not sure what flies are hatching up in that area but starting this week there ought to be some very good hatches coming off with the heat. For bait fishers up river night crawlers would probably do best for German Browns. Down around Junction City there should be more Springer's showing up now that the river flows are down. Yesterdays report from Del Loma was fishing is slow right now but as more Springer's move up river the fishing will get better after the Fourth of July.
The Lower Trinity has yet to catch on fire but the salmon are moving through Hoopa because I got word that there is some roe available if I can get down there in the early mornings. To me this is an indicator that more and larger Salmon are on their way. I did find out that some nice adult Steelhead are also working the Salmon in hopes of getting some roe. The Junction City Weir count will come out Monday but last weeks count showed that 17 adult hatchery Steelhead went through. There were no ??-pounders yet but hopefully they will be along shortly.
The Mid-Klamath from Youngs Bar up to Orleans is seeing some Shad. A couple of my friends were fishing the Slate Creek riffle and were able to hook 30 nice Shad in the 3-4lbs range. Most all of them were big fat females and were hitting orange shad darts early then went to green later in the morning. They also told me that the water quality was really poor as there was lots of algae foam floating down the river and plumes of algae with moss hanging on the rocks 5ft. long in the slower shallow water. Water temperatures at the Weitchpec gauge this morning showed that the river was 67.9 degrees at 9:00am. Let's hope that some one is paying attention to the water temperatures down there so we don't have another salmon crises. Until next time-------
