Trinity Lake Fish Report 05-20-07

by E.B. Duggan
5-20-2007
Trinity Lake is 29 ft. below the over flow and 82 % of capacity. Average inflow to
the lake for the week is 2,184cfs. 249cfs are being released to the Sacramento River
through the Clear Creek tunnel. Water releases into the Trinity River @ Lewiston
flows are 2,340cfs & water temperatures are 47.6 degrees with air temps of 58
degrees at 1:00pm today. Douglas City flows are 2,216cfs @ 4.9ft, with water temps
of 48.8 degrees & air temps are 62 degrees. Helena / North Fork water flows are
2,540cfs @12.6ft, with water temperatures of 49.3 degrees and air temps of 63
degrees. Cedar Flat water flows are 2,800cfs @ 7ft. Willow Creek flows are est. @
3,200cfs with water temperatures about 52 degrees and air at 60 degrees at 1:00pm
today. Hoopa water flows are 4,350 cfs. @ 15.3ft, with water temps of about 557
degrees.
The Klamath River releases at Iron Gate are 1,420cfs. Seiad Valley flows are 2,620cfs @ 3.9t. Happy Camp flows are est. at about 2,840cfs. Somes Bar flows are 4,760cfs; Orleans flows are 6,010cfs @6.3ft. Water flows at Weitchpec are about 10.3K cfs with water temps of 58.2 degrees & air temps at 62 degrees. Klamath at 101 Bridge is 12.4K cfs @ 12.1ft and water temperatures are 60 degrees. Last weeks temps for the Trinity Valley were 90/44 degrees with no rain. Next weeks forecast is for 89/44 degrees with possible showers Monday and overcast mornings and clearing in the afternoons the rest of the week. Both rivers are now seeing snowmelt, which is causing the rivers to stay up rather than dropping like the dam releases are. I know the Sierra Trout opener was greatly awaited and that many of the lakes are turning out some whoppers. The snowmelt was such that fishing was very good over there. On the other hand we in the Klamath/Trinity basin are seeing another story. The big problem I see is whether we will have the water for our Fall Run Chinook to spawn in or will it be the beginning of a very dry down cycle. Let's hope not and that the Steelhead and Salmon continue to flourish and that our fishing will begin to return to a semblance of years past.
Fishing on the Trinity is slow and it is hard to locate the few springers that are in the river. The warmer weather last week caused snowmelt, which has caused the Trinity to fluctuate, and making it hard to fish below Junction City. Hopefully this cool down will make the lower section of the river more fishable than it was last week. The upper sections of the river are starting to really look good and there have been a few Springer's reported in that area. I suspect that they are the "Early Birds" and are just showing up to make us excited about fishing. Don't forget that the NEW fishing regulations are not posted yet so the old regulations of 1-adult Salmon and 2-jacks per day are still in effect.
The Klamath has been experiencing about the same conditions as the Trinity except that it has been fishable on the down cycles mostly in the upper sections above Happy Camp. Trout fishing has been on again and off again in that area depending on the weather. In the lower areas around Orleans there has been some bank fishing but not much. The good news is that down around the mouth of the Klamath there are good reports of Springer's showing up. Some of the guides down there are booking trips and using jet boats to get to the fishing areas already.
For those of you that have not been following the Fish and Game Commissions' web site I am happy to announce that Gov. Schwarzenegger appointed G. Michael Sutton to the commission to fill the vacancy left by the death of Mr. Hatoy. Mr. Sutton took his seat just before the May meeting in San Diego and was ready and up to speed on the proposed fishing regulations. We will have to keep our eyes open and hear what he has to say about some of the "New" proposed Ocean Fishing Preserves. I do know he is concerned about our In-River Fisheries and that he does listen to what "we" the fishermen have to say about them. Until next time----
Good Fish'en ------ Good Luck and remember: "Keep your Tip up and a tight line lands fish!"
