Summer Has Arrived!

The first day of summer arrived Friday June 20th but it doesn’t feel like summer yet. We are expecting warmer days next week. The temperatures predicted for the next week are more like summer. Summer water flows are expected sometime around the first week of July. Right now, the water flows are getting closer to swimming but are still in the mid 50 degrees. One must be careful while swimming and tubing as the water current is still deceptively strong in some areas. Kimtu Beach is open to swimming and tubing now. The Trinity is still strong enough for rafting if one wishes to go.
TRRP has paused the Wednesday evening programs at the Weaverville Brewery for the summer as river restoration will begin soon. The Junction City campground access is still not usable yet but hopefully in July. I understand that their lease for the offices has been renewed also, which is good news because of all the government budget cuts.
Fishing has been better for the rivers now that the rivers have dropped and flows are allowing one to wade some. The Trinity is finally down to wading in some places. It is not down to summer flows yet but will soon be. As for Salmon fishing there is still hope that it will recover and we can once again fish for Salmon, maybe next year!
Lewiston Lake: From Louise; Trinity Lake releases into Lewiston Lake are good for fishing right now. Last week around Father’s Day the fishing started to pick up. Several stringers brought into the marina had fish up to 1.5 to 2 pounds. Bait fishers found night crawlers and plane old orange power bait worked best. (No glitter) Hardware fishers, gold cast masters and little Cleo’s were doing the trick. Flyfisher, midges were the top flies. The marina is starting to release some of the prized big trout from the pens into the lake a little at a time. You can contact the Pine Cove Marina and ask Louise or Matt (530)778-3878); for Lewiston Lake fishing; for the Upper Trinity River you can call Indian Creek Lodge, Andy or Hannah, (530)623-6294), Junction City Store, Butch, (530)623-2803.
Willow Creek: Fishing the Willow Creek/Big Rock area is fair to good in the early mornings if you get there before the sunbathers of swimmers. Fishing below Big Rock is picking up a bit, the mouth of South Fork and up is prime fishing early mornings fair in the evenings. Tish Tang area has also started to produce some fair trout fishing in the mornings. The weir at up at Cox Bar is being ready to be installed, the weirs at Tish Tang and Willow Creek won’t be installed until later.
