Last weeks temperatures for the Trinity Valley were 70/34 degrees with 1.9
inches of rain. Forecasts for next week are for 62/33 with partly cloudy
mornings and sunny afternoons. It looks more like spring every day now.
This past week we have had morning showers and sunny afternoons. If this
kind o weather keeps up our snow pack in the mountains will start melting
even though we got a good dusting in the higher elevations last week.
Last week I went up to Medford to get my new oars for the boat and as we
came back down the Klamath we were able to take our time and look over the
river. It was hard to believe the water conditions of the upper Klamath
above the Seiad Valley. The river was a dirty brown color from above the
Highway I-5 Bridge clear down to Happy Camp.
C In fact my wife made the comment "why is there so much foam on the river?"
I had to explain the the foam was caused by the algae from the dams and
agriculture run-off from all of the farms in the upper Klamath River basin.
It is a total shame the our society can technically treat sewer water to the
point of making it drinkable for human consumption yet can not clean up the
river to the extent that it is fit for our Salmon to survive the 309 mile
trip from the ocean to the Iron Gate Hatchery. The bad part is that the
river does start to clean up some from Happy Camp down to Orleans because of
the injection of fresh water from incoming streams. It has been stated for a
long time the the water quality of the upper Klamath is so poor that it can
not meet the minimum "water quality standards" of the State Water Quality
Board. Now what does that say for the regulatory boards of the state of
California? Any as we came on down the Klamath it did start to look better
by the time we crossed the bridge at Weitchpec and started to drive up the
beautiful Trinity. All the time we were traveling along the Klamath we did
not see one angler fishing and the upper Klamath was fishable.
As we traveled up the Trinity I noticed that the Lower Trinity was flowing
quite heavily and that there only were a few anglers along the river and
they were in areas that had lots of back eddies. The next day I made a few
calls to some of my river contacts and found out there was little or very
few fish being landed in the lower section of the Trinity. Earlier this week
I had to go up to Weaverville for a fisheries meeting and also meet with a
group of fishing guides and business people. We discussed some of the
problems of last season and of the possible problem of the coming Salmon
season (2008). On my way up river I stopped to discuss fishing conditions
with some lodge owners and guides I know who fish the mid Trinity and was
glad to hear they were catching some fish. Mostly down runners but a few
Brown trout also. This is good news as the Trinity will close to Steelhead
and Salmon fishing April 1st from the mouth of the South Fork down to the
confluence with the Klamath for the duration of the Spring Run Chinook
Salmon season. The good part is that there is still plenty of winter /
spring fishing from South Fork up to Lewiston. Also the Fly Fishing Only
section of the Trinity will open April 1st. So all you early fly fishers had
better get ready as there is plenty of Germen Browns with a good mix of
hatchery down runners available in that section of the river. You will also
be able to hook a few in the Douglas City area. So get out the "sore muscle
ointment", limber up your arm and check out your fly assortment as well as
make sure you have good fresh line and leaders. Until next time ------
"Don't forger the PFMC hearing in Eureka April 1st at the Red Lion 7PM.
Good Fish'en ------- Good Luck and remember: "Keep your Tip up and a tight
line lands fish!"
