I would like to take this time to wish all of my faithful readers HAPPY?ĮHOLIDAYS. May you have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Years. December 22?Įwas the Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year and the beginning of?Įthe winter months. The good part of this statement is that the days will?Įonly get longer from this day forward. For a fisherman that means "more?Įhours to fish". I hope that everyone got their Christmas orders into Santa?ĮClause so that your gift under the Christmas tree will be what you want for?Įthe froth coming fishing season. One thing I always like is that I get a new?Įfishing license for the New Year, something a fisherman can always use! This?Įis also a good time for one to check out and reline your reels with fresh?Įline for "Winter Steelhead" fishing because the coming cold and high waters?Įare here. Fresh line is one way to be sure that you will not loose that?Į"once in a life time" catch. Cold and high water add up to rough wear on the?Įfishing line and a reel of fresh line is one way to prevent loosing that?Įbeautiful Winter Steelhead. Also don't forget about the warm clothing as?Įthey can make the difference between a miserable day on the river or a great?Įfishing experience.

Last weeks temperatures for the Trinity Valley were 57/36 degrees with 5.2?Įinches of rain. Forecasts for next week are for 52/35 degrees with rain and?Įshowers into Thursday. We saw a little bit of snow and some hail in the?Įvalley but plenty of snow up in the higher peaks and ridges around the?Įvalley. Right now temperatures are rising in the valley as we get more rain.?ĮThe lower part of the river from South Fork on down saw the river come up?Įtwo to three feet, while the upper river only saw an increase of about six?Įto twelve inches. This left the upper section of the river from Old Lewiston?ĮBridge down to the North Fork/Helena in fair to good fishing condition while?Įthe lower section is mostly unfishable for the time being. Right now most of?Įthe Steelhead are up there staging to go into the hatchery. The Steelhead?Įcounts for the Trinity River Hatchery are about 50% below last years count?Įat this time, but then again it is a little early for the Iron Heads to be?Įentering the hatchery. If the rains keep up as they have been we could see?Įsome fresh "Wild Steelies" come into the river system in the very near?Įfuture.

It seems as though the last series of storms has moved many of the fish into?Įthe upper river section because the best fishing right now is from Old?ĮLewiston Bridge down to Douglas City. You must remember that the water is?Įvery cold and Steelhead are not going to jump on the first offering you?Įpresent or they see. It has to be presented in a very appetizing or?Įdisturbing manner to make them want to either protect their territory or?Įwant to eat this delicious delicacy coming their way. THINK FISH!!! You also?Įmust remember the cold water uses more of the fish's energy therefore they?Įbecome very lethargic and not a willing participant or react to your?Įpresentation.

The Upper Klamath is mudding up to some extent and the fishing is going to?Įbe hard for the time being. As the river drops fishing should success should?Įincrease as this storm is bring more fish up river. At the same time the?Įmiddle part of the river is very high and mostly unfishable. Fishing this?Įarea I would recommend that one use fresh roe if you have access to it.?ĮFishing below Weitchpec right now I would say is an act of futility because?Įthe river is blown out. Until next time ------
