Sturgeon bite continues on Sacramento River

03/31/12 -- Daryl Cook of Sacramento busted this white sturgeon at Freeport on the Sacramento River with lamprey eel and pile worms. This slot-legal fish measured 49 inches and weighed 25 pounds. Bait and photo supplied by Kristian Du Vall of Elkhorn Bait and Tackle in Rio Linda.

The daily and annual bag limit for white sturgeion is one fish per day and three fish per year statewide. To be retained, white sturgeon must be no less than 46 inches total length or no greater than 66 inches. Sturgeon not within this slot limit must be returned to the water where they are caught. 

Green sturgeon may not be taken or possessed. It is also unlawful to fish for any sturgeon on the Sacramento River from Keswick Dam to the Highway 162 Bridge.
