Rogue Aquatics

Humboldt’s Freshwater Lagoon good for rainbows

The California DFG planted approximately 3400 catchable-size trout in Freshwater Lagoon in September making this small but challenging body of water one of the only choices for the average put and take angler in Humboldt County.

Freshwater Lagoon was put on the “plant” list early by the DFG. The Lagoon is within sight of the ocean and considering its size, about 250 acres it gets a lot of fish. This year, due to restrictions on other waters and the availability of good numbers of rainbows, the Lagoon turns out to be a great destination if you want a limit of fish including a chance at some sizeable holdovers. At this time of year weed growth should not be a problem. The limit is five fish and the season is open year-round.

Since Freshwater Lagoon is so close to the ocean you might want to pack surf fishing gear. Good numbers of redtail perch are caught off the beaches just north of the Lagoon or at Gold Bluff Beach, which can be reached via a beautiful drive from Highway 101.

There are suitable launching facilities at the north end of the Lagoon for those who wish to troll or you can fish from the bank. Freshwater Lagoon is just a few miles south of Orick if you need supplies and if you are looking to stay overnight there are many accommodations between Trinidad and Orick, the closest being the Stone Lagoon RV Park.
