“Don’t Go Away! The Year’s Top 10 Fish Tales Are Next.”
By Frank Galusha, EasyWriter
Nothing is older than yesterday’s newspaper but nothing is more boring or superficial than recycled 15-second sound bites on radio and TV. One dose of news a day is enough for most of us. Our habit of grabbing the dial or the clicker proves that. “But wait!” say the newscasters. “Breaking news is just ahead.” Alas, the film that used to come at eleven is now “promised” to arrive in 180 seconds or less. It rarely does. The producers have made a game out of delaying delivery sometimes beyond the next commercial break. Howie Mandell’s “We’ll open that case when we come back,” is a thousand times more tantalizing than the news most likely to follow the equally repetitive barrage of TV commercials: male enhancement products, Mighty MendIt, or Madison Avenue’s computer-generated talking geckos, “afflac-ing” ducks and cavorting whales. All are out to sell us some form of insurance we can’t use, afford or need. At least the whales are real outdoor creatures until they are morphed into a logo. Invariably, the “story” we were promised was one we saw in the prior news cycle or one that simply escapes notice altogether. |
