Shasta Lake trout fishing.

Todays group from the great state of Texas did a great job and kept their heads in the game even with a big bite lull mid day.

Today kicked off our spring trout season on Shasta Lake.  Shasta Lake is fishing like its late April for trout already and with constant sunshine and warm air temps, we're seeing a good Plankton/Daphnia bloom.  It really affects the rainbow bite because the rainbows will eat plankton all day long.  They also have a taste for the Daphnia blooms and we're seeing lots of that going on now too.  Good news is we may just see Shad earlier this season which will kick off summer pattern trout fishing.  I did see seagulls diving on a bait ball last week early in the morning in front of Sacramento Point.  Thats my only sighting, but its a good sign none the less.  Surface temps on Shasta are 51 degrees in the morning, but have been hitting 53 by afternoon on sunny days.  Side planers are really shining right now and I'm catching trout 5/1 over the downriggers.  I ran one downrigger today and got the first two fish of the day at 30'.  That was the last downrigger bite of the day and everything came above 10' feet even at 3:30 in the afternoon.  We're going to be in a constant pattern of change until June if conditions persist.  I'll be giving personal experience reports and reports that our team of guides give me.  Follow us as the season wears on and I'll do my best to keep everyone up to date on the trout fishing and Shasta Lake conditions.

Thank you!

Capt. Jeff
