Truckee River Report

The Truckee is recovering nicely after the drought. Trophy class rainbow and brown trout have been reported throughout the Nevada portion of the river. Summer surveys have shown that trout populations are stronger from downtown Reno upstream, but plenty of great fish have been caught out east. Flows have come down in Reno from over 1000 cfs  to 600 cfs this week. As long as flows remain high, anchor ice shouldn’t be a problem. While winter fishing can be a little intimidating, consistency is the key to winter success. Consistent flows and daytime temperatures will greatly effect fishing. Sporadic Midge and Baetis(BWO) mayfly hatches should become more prolific as winter progresses. Skwala stoneflies should also start to make a comeback this season with the higher water. Fly anglers have reported finding fish in slow deep runs and along the slower seams. Indicator fishing with micro mayflies, worm patterns, and small pheasant tails has been best. Streamer fishermen have had some success dead drifting and slowly retrieving heavy weighted Woolly Buggers. It’s also a good idea to have a few Baetis(BWO) patterns in your box this time of the year.  Bait anglers using worms and silver spinners are having some success in the deeper pools. Fish are definitely more active and willing to chase a lures during the warmest part of the day.
